Yesterday we ended the post on The Ark and Noah talking about the instruction from God to cover the Ark inside and out with “pitch”. The word Gopher and the word pitch found here (and also the Hebrew word used later on in the books of Moses for “atonement”) are all from the same basic Hebrew root, which means “to cover.” The symbol of the atoning blood of Jesus is very evident here. The ark represents Jesus as the Savior of mankind and the blood shed by Him covers our sins.
Something else is interesting that I did not mention yesterday – There are only 3 arks found in scripture. Noah’s Ark, the ark of bulrushes that Moses was placed in as a baby when his mother hid him in the river – and that ark was covered in pitch as well, and the Ark of the Covenant which sheltered the two tablets that were the holy law of God. Each ark represents a shelter. What a beautiful picture scripture paints here for the coming of our Savior and His shelter that He provides for us.
Genesis 6:14 14Make yourself an ark of gopher wood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and outside with pitch.
Exodus 2:3 3 But when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of bulrushes for him, daubed it with asphalt and pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank.
Exodus 25:16 16 And you shall put into the ark the Testimony which I will give you.
Next, God told Noah to make rooms in the Ark. The word used for rooms here translates as “nests”. This represents not only a place of safety but resting places as well. Just as Jesus is our Shelter in our storms of life, He also tells us He will give us rest. What a wonderful, peaceful picture that paints. Safety, rest and comfort.
The next instructions were the dimensions of the Ark. Like I said yesterday, this was a massive undertaking! It was around Five Hundred feet long and it took almost One Hundred and Twenty years to build. Remember, Noah was somewhere around 500 years old when God have him this plan. The scripture says Noah was 600 years old when the flood waters were on the earth.
Genesis 6:15 15 And this is how you shall make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits.
God told Noah to make a window in the top of the Ark. This is a symbol of looking up to God for all we need. The window was placed – not for them to see the destruction and devastation around them but to keep their eyes on God. Just as God told Noah to make “a” door in the side of the Ark. One door! One way in for all who entered! This is representation of Jesus being the Only Way to the Father. All must go through One door. God also instructed Noah to make the Ark with three decks. There is some uncertainty about the the phrasing “three decks” here by the different commentaries that I have read. Here is what Ray Steadman say about them.
“Finally, we are told there were three decks to be built in the ark. I do not want to stress this unduly, but this is highly suggestive of the humanity of our Lord — body, soul, and spirit. The whole man was given up for us. Also there is provision in Christ for the completion of the whole man — body, soul and spirit — we are to be redeemed in him.”
Genesis 6:16 16 You shall make a window for the ark, and you shall finish it to a cubit from above; and set the door of the ark in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, and third decks.
Then, finally, God said to Noah… “Come into the Ark…” God didn’t say you go into the Ark with your family and the animals… no, God said “Come” which says God was there with them. Noah was not leaving God’s presence, but going into the presence of God, into the shelter of The Most High God. This is also a foreshadowing of what Jesus said “Come unto me, all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28
Genesis 7:1 Then the Lord said to Noah, “Come into the ark, you and all your household, because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation.
Then the Lord, Himself, closed them in. Noah was not responsible for closing the door. God alone did it.
Genesis 7:16 16 So those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him; and the Lord shut him in.
I am going to close this post out with that for now. There is much more to discuss about the flood. I believe I have covered all of the symbolism topics that I can at this point. I may have missed a couple, but these are the ones God laid on my heart to bring to your attention. I have so enjoyed studying and researching this information about the Ark and Noah. It has broadened my mind and heart on so many things about that time in History and about God and His Sovereign provision. God loves His creation and the people He put on this earth! From Adam to the baby that is born every minute of every day! He wants to spend eternity with us all. We are His beloved!
In all my research and looking around on the internet, I found the most interesting website. They believe they have found the Ark of Noah! Yes! They have wonderful pictures and documentation … yes, actual documentation of what was found that dates to pre-flood and the time of Noah. It is an exciting website and one I didn’t have near enough time to explore fully. I will in the days to come though. Here is the link to it Noah’s Ark Site. If you have any doubts about the Ark, you have to see this website. It is amazing the discoveries they have uncovered.
